HELPING YOUNG AUSTRALIANS TO MAKE CHANGE

Lilley MP Wayne Swan today congratulated the Jabiru Community, Youth and Children's Services Association for being awarded funding as part of the Rudd Government's new Youth Development Support Program.

Twenty four organisations across Australia will share in grants from about $5,000 to $60, 000. The projects will start this month and run until June next year.

Jabiru will receive a grant of more than $10,000 for the establishment of the Jabiru-REspec Youth Development Project.

"This program provides funding for projects which support young people during the crucial transition to independence and adulthood and inspire them to be the best they can be," Mr Swan said.

"The project will develop a young person's community action group, to be consolidated for young people in our community.

"Participants will undertake skill development and training in Not-for-Profit management, community development and event management."

"I am proud to see that Jabiru has been successful, especially given the huge number of organisations which applied for this funding," Mr Swan said.

Bidding for funding was highly competitive with more that 400 applications, so it is a significant achievement to be chosen as one of the 24 successful projects.

The Australian Government established the Youth Development and Support Program to provide funds for development opportunities for young people in Australia aged between 12 and 25 years.
The Government has committed $500,000 under the Program to fund initiatives that inspire and encourage young people to engage with government and community, and help them develop skills and connections within their communities.

The chosen projects cater for the diverse situations and experiences that young people find themselves in today and are based in communities across Australia.
